PLATELET RICH PLASMA – (PRP)

WHAT IS PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) THERAPY?

Why is it preferred to other available treatments?

Regenerative or Biologic Therapy is an enriched growth factor concentrate made from your own blood (it is also known as Platelet Rich Plasma-PRP, ATG-Autologous Tissue Graft therapy, peripheral stem cell therapy, etc).  These growth factors promote connective tissue healing, bone regeneration, new blood vessel formation, and speeds up overall wound healing.  It is the only available product that contains elevated levels of all your naturally occurring growth factors.  Since these factors are taken directly from you, they are maintained in precisely the same ratios found circulating in your own body.  There are other recombinant products available; these products are usually synthetic derivatives of a single growth factor instead of containing all of the growth factors.  Fibrin glues are other products that are currently available also; however, the fibrin glues currently available do not contain any growth factors and are virally inactive derivatives of blood components drawn for other donors.

How is it made and is it safe?

PRP is derived from a small quantity of your own blood (usually 20-60cc).  It is drawn at the time of your procedure.  It is then placed in a specialized centrifuge that spins and automatically separates the red blood cells from the plasma.  The plasma is then further centrifuged to concentrate the autologous platelets and your natural growth factors (typically 20X the normal concentration).  The PRP is then available to be used as outlined by your physician.  The entire process typically takes 15-30 minutes.  Because the RCT it is drawn and prepared at the time it will be used, it is insulated against the risk of outside disease transmission or allergic reactions.

What is it used for?

PRP is used as a tool to help wound and tissue healing.  Clinical data has shown that PRP may help enhance and accelerate your body’s normal healing process.  It benefits healing processes by decreasing inflammation & swelling, enhancing wound closure, accelerate bone & connective tissue growth, and reduces overall healing times.  It has been used before-during-after surgical procedures, for treatment of arthritic joints, ligament & tendon injuries, and most connective tissue injuries.

It is recommended that you drink 2-4 extra glasses of water the day of and the day after the procedure to help with volume replacement (to help facilitate the blood draw).
