Amniotic fluid is a kind of fluid that is present in the placenta of healthy newborns. The placenta is part of the uterine wall in a pregnant woman that surrounds the fetus. The fetus is attached to the mother via the umbilical cord, and the placenta helps in the nourishment of the fetus and the elimination of waste. The amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of the placenta. It is filled with amniotic fluid that helps cushion the fetus and facilitates the mother's exchange of nutrients.

The amniotic fluid or placental matrix is a substance that is taken from the placenta of newborn babies. This substance can be used to treat damaged joints, control inflammation and pain, replace damaged tissue, initiate natural regeneration, and reduce scar tissue formation.

What is the amniotic or placental matrix composed of?

The amniotic or placental matrix consists of a chorion frondosum, which develops from the fetal blastocyst. The material component called decidua basalis develops from the mother's uterine tissue. The development of the placenta starts after fertilization and implantation. The fluid contains no stem cells, through its regenerative capabilities are similar to it. Additionally, the amniotic fluid contains collagen and extracellular matrix protein.

What are the benefits of amniotic/placental matrix?

  • The amniotic fluid reduces the pain associated with the damaged tissues in joints, lower back, neck, and other body parts.
  • It improves and restores the function of muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, or other damaged tissues.
  • It helps heal wounds and reduces the pain, immobility, and risk of amputation associated with injuries.
  • Since they contain growth factors, cytokines, hyaluronic acid, and other cells, the amniotic fluid helps reconstruct damaged tissue.
  • The use of a placental matrix eliminates the need for painful, invasive, time-consuming, and expensive procedures such as bone marrow or fat removal.
  • They do not have immune system concerns or tissue rejection because they are immune-privileged.
  • This substance helps promote tissue repair by creating a natural scaffold to enable adhesion while assisting cellular migration and proliferation
  • It aids in soft tissue reconstruction through growth factors found in amniotic tissue
  • It supports cellular proliferation and new collagen formation and hence minimizes scar tissue formation

What is the process of using the Placental or amniotic matrix?

As the placental matrix has already been collected from the discarded or donated placenta of the newborn babies and stored, it is ready for use on the patient. In this therapy, a small amount of placental tissue matrix is injected into the patient to treat the damaged joint, spine, or wound. Ultrasound or fluoroscopy is used to precisely locate the exact area of the injury. This placental tissue matrix therapy takes advantage of the body's ability to repair itself.

How long does the healing process take in placental or amniotic therapy?

Usually, the healing and repair process takes about three to four months to achieve the maximum benefit. In most patients, the improvement starts to reflect within the first two weeks of treatment.
